Sighs of the Spirit

This volume is an attempt to fill the need in the divine services of the Byzantine churches for presbyteral prayers proper to the major feasts and seasons of the year, corresponding to the usual prayers (prayers of light, and morning prayers) found in vespers and matins. These new compositions, traditional and scriptural in language and style, collect the specific seasonal or festal sentiments and aspirations of the praying church, as evidenced in the specific hymns and readings of the day, for each particular part of each service. When distributed throughout the divine services and sung by the celebrantythey bring the brilliant light of the liturgy out from under the bushel of obscurity for a renewed spirit of understanding. Over three hundred prayers, more than twelve for each feast as required by the services.
