The Third Sunday of Lent

Fourth before Easter

Today we honor the holy and life-giving cross.

At vespers

On Saturday evening, at the incense psalms, these prosomia, in Tone VI:

Escorted now by spirit hosts, * the holy cross is borne into our midst in piety and reverence, * and all who believe are called forth to honor it. * Come, then, all you people everywhere! Enlightened and fortified by our faithful lenten observances, * let us recognize in it the emblem of our salvation, * and, falling down before that sacred wood, * let sentiments of love and devotion fill our hearts, * as we cry out with one accord: * Hail, precious cross! Assurance of the world's salvation!

...

And this troparion, in Tone I:

For those who grasp the meaning of the cross, * it is an ever-flowing fountain of wisdom, * the very gate to eternal life * that opens its portals to all, * and beckons us to enter the kingdom of heaven. * For this, we sing the praises of him who gave his life thereon: * Glory to you, O Lord!

At matins

The troparion as at vespers.

At Psalm 51(50), the following troparion in Tone II to replace the usual lenten troparia for Sundays.

In our very midst you accomplished our salvation, Christ our God: * For, by stretching forth your spotless arms upon the cross, * you gathered all the nations of the world, * and for this they praise you with this hymn: * Glory to you, O Lord.

...

Kondakion, Tone VII:

The angel's fiery sword no longer guards the gate of paradise * for the cross of the Lord has put out its flames once and for all. * Death has lost its power and Hades can no longer boast victory, * and you, O saviour, have stood among the dead, * inviting them to everlasting life in heaven above.
